In The Garage: Exhaust Shoot-out

Have you been looking to buy an exhaust system or just wondering what exhaust systems are out there on the market?

Maybe a better question would be, what exhaust system does what and how loud is it? Well, we’ve taken those many emails and phone calls you, our readers, have told us about and get the real scoop on exhaust systems. We put a handful of slip-on and full dual exhaust systems to the test on the dyno and through the sound decibel reader to see what exhaust really does what and what exhausts are easy, or hard, to install. You might be surprised to learn which of your favorite exhaust systems really works, and the under dog system that beat out some of the major brands.

Along with the full dyno sheets, db reads and installation reviews, we will also discuss what exactly a spark arrestor is, and why it’s so important, what is a decibel and what’s legal, packing your exhaust system and much more. So be sure to pick up a copy of the next issue (July/August 07) of Side X Side Action Magazine to get the real deal on bolt on exhaust performance.

This is when the bed would have came in handy, 8 different pipes were used for this shootout, some of which aren’t even on the market yet!
We take sound very seriously, so to get a proper reading of decibels we pulled out all the stops and brought out the right equipment and the guys who know how to use it.
Sound guru Chris Real came down for the day to help us crack the sound code and give us some info on how to measure sound, and everything you could ever possibly want to know about sound levels and laws.

do the bolton pipes make any differance and is there any jetting involved? also the sound difference the muffler on my 07 sounds like a big old can and is kind of loud. thanks

  2. Cody Fletcher Says:

The bolt on pipes do make some power, especially in the torque curve. Most will not need jetting, but if you use an after -market intake you’ll need to re-jet.
